General Information

The Pratt Institute Library's collection, encompassing over 200,000 volumes of print materials, 700+ current periodical subscriptions. The collection aims to support teaching and research in the fields of art, architecture, design, liberal arts, sciences and allied fields. The Library provides a broad intellectual and creative context for students at Pratt Institute.

Searching for Books in PrattCat

Books are searchable in the online catalog, PrattCat.

  • Use the keyword search for a general initial search.
  • Enter the topic you are researching and select 'go'.
  • From the results page, click on the title of the book to display the location and the call number.

Books are shelved using the Dewey Decimal System. Most books are located in the stacks or in the reference area . Some books and graduate theses are kept in secure locations. The catalog record for these items will direct the researcher to ask at reference for assistance.

Print Journals at the Pratt Libraries

Pratt Institute Libraries subscribe to approximately 600 magazines, journals, and newspapers, ranging from peer-reviewed academic journals to emerging magazines and DIY (do-it-yourself) ‘zines. The collection supports Pratt Institute's diverse curricula, and is especially strong in the areas of fine arts, architecture, design, and fashion. Other subjects include current affairs, literature, science, music, education, cultural studies and more. The collection includes regional, national and international materials, as well as a number of non-English language titles.

Locating Periodicals

Journals, magazines and newspapers are searchable in the online catalog, PrattCat.

  • Click on the Browse tab in PrattCat and select Journal/Newspaper Title Browse from the drop-down menu.
  • Enter the title of the journal, magazine or newspaper that you would like to locate and select 'go'.
  • From the results page, click on the title of the periodical you are trying to locate to view the location and holdings information.

Microforms

Pratt Institute Library's microform collection includes The New York Times on microfilm from 1851 to the present year. To locate articles on a particular subject, by a particular author or date, consult The New York Times Indexes (R 071 N56) located on the 1st floor (recent years) and 3rd floor (older years). Additional titles available on microform include the Chronicle of Higher Education, Architectural Record and Utne Reader, and others.

Please ask a librarian at the 1st floor Reference Desk for assistance locating microforms and using the microform machine.
